Altar Servers

In the absence of Instituted Acolytes, the Altar Servers assist the priest at Mass by carrying the Cross & candles, assisting the priest with the book, incense, water & wine. Altar Servers, through their actions and role in the liturgy, constantly aim to be prayerful models for the congregation. Altar Servers should always be alert during Masses and liturgies in the event the Priest may need assistance in carrying out specific functions.

Altar Servers at the Cathedral-Basilica partake in a special privilege different from other parishes or churches in the archdiocese. Cathedral-Basilica Altar Servers, over the years, are trained to assist the Archbishop at high Masses which he presides.
The ministry of Altar Servers is reserved for younger parishioners who have received the Sacrament of Holy Communion. Before being an Altar Server, the candidate must have the permission of his or her parents if they are underage and attend Mass regularly. Candidates are then trained to carry out the duties for Mass before officially serving.
